The Gretchen Schuette Art Gallery recently hosted a collection of works titled “A Moment Outside” by Pacific Northwest artist Sadé DuBoise.

The collection houses over ten pieces utilizing mixed media including: fabric, quilting, and acrylic painting.

A yellow quilted coat hangs against a white wall. There are pink and green flowers scattered on the coat. There are two pockets, one on each flap of the coat, with painted images of black women with flowers in their hair looking sideways.

DuBoise is a local artist born in north Portland and residing in Tigard. She is currently a Bachelor of Fine Arts candidate in painting at Willamette University’s Pacific Northwest College of Art.

Her website describes the focus of her art, which centers around the experiences of Black women as individuals and how they traverse the inequitable landscape of American culture.

DuBoise described “A Moment Outside” in the artist description book available at the beginning of the gallery as the, “connection between nature and Black women.” She cited the inspiration for the collection as coming from her “Black Muses” project, which is a collection of works that celebrate over 50 Black women.

A fabric, circular art piece hangs against a white wall. The edge of the piece is broken into four sections of dark green and red patterns. At the center is a Black woman looking sideways. White fur like tassels hang from each side.

The gallery book also explained that the collection, “invites viewers to engage with tranquil beauty and healing quality of nature.”

The display in the gallery which stood from April 3 to May 3, was the debut for the collection. “A Moment Outside” will continue to be displayed in other areas around the Salem Campus.
